30 Practice Strategies to Make Your Students Invincible Under Pressure

Regular practicing and practicing for performance are two different things.

Anyone who has taught piano for more than a minute knows that most students (unless they have a lot of self-discipline) will simply play through their pieces and call it “practice.” However, doing this will not ensure reliable performance under pressure for most intermediate and advanced students.

So, we have to teach our students practice techniques that will

  1. break them out of the cycle of mindlessly playing through

  2. help them practice performing even when no one else is around

  3. help them recreate performance conditions in their practice space so they are prepared for the actual event.

Whether you are preparing your student for a recital, an exam, a festival, a competition, or an audition, I hope that these strategies will give you some new ideas (or remind you of some old ones!) and engage your student's critical thinking in new ways.
