How To Teach Kuhlau Sonatina in A Minor

Today we're talking about piano practice techniques, specifically as they apply to the 3rd movement of Kuhlau’s Sonatina in A Minor Op.88, No.3.

Since this piece sounds so similar to Mozart’s Rondo alla turca, it’s included in my newest resource, Not Ready Yet.

Not Ready Yet - suggestions, complete with direct links to quality editions, for alternative and preparatory repertoire appropriate for TEN of the most-asked-for pieces. The next time a beginner or intermediate student asks you to play Clair de lune, the Pathetique, or Maple Leaf Rag, be prepared and have options at your fingertips! Check it out here.

And now, back to the piece at hand:

There’s no perfect way to practice, and there is no set of practice techniques that can guarantee perfect playing. However, several techniques apply to all sorts of pieces in all sorts of styles.

I hear far too often from professional musicians, “I never really learned to practice until I went to get my music degree.” Teachers - we absolutely must train our students in effective practice techniques and help them take ownership of their practice time.

Practice techniques demonstrated in the video below:

  • Regular practice of scales and other standard technical drills to prepare for A minor scales and one E major scale, and chromatic scales

  • Chord blocking

  • Redistribution between the hands

  • Omitting grace notes and then reinserting

  • Inserting rests for dramatic dynamic changes
